Spring 2010 Student Union Elections

 

How to Get Started

  • Create a petition for your entrance to the ballot. List must include printed name, signature, and ID number.
    • SU candidates must obtain 100 signatures from all grades.
    • Caucus candidates must obtain 50 signatures from their class.

-          An SU ticket must include a presidential candidate from the junior class and a vice presidential candidate from the sophomore class.

-          Sign, detach, and submit the affidavit to run.

-          Register as many as 10 people as your official campaigners (those who may distribute materials on your behalf) by listing their names and IDs.

-Note: You will be held responsible for the actions of your campaign managers. Select your managers wisely.

-          Write and submit a personal statement outlining your platform, no more than 150 words, and email it tostuyboe@gmail.com. Submit your petition, affidavit, your official campaigner list, and a picture of both candidates in a standard manila envelope with the names of both candidates on the outside to a BOE member.

-          On the manila folder, please write your names and the election you are participating in.

RULES FOR CAMPAIGNING (non-negotiable)

  1. Only standard 8 ½ x 11 sized paper can be used for campaign materials, distributed or posted (NOTHING ELSE, NO EXCEPTIONS)—Paper may be folded into any shape.
  2. Posters (standard 8 ½ x 11 sized paper) may only be placed one per bulletin board and NOWHERE ELSE.
  3. No profanity, slander, defamation, sex, or drugs, are allowed in campaign literature or in any part of the campaign.
  4. Only registered campaigners may campaign for you. You may not ask for non-campaign managers to campaign for you.
  5. You are responsible for cleaning up any of your own campaign materials around the school every single day. Don’t litter.
  1. There is NO CAMPAIGNING on Election Day and there is a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY ON THE DAY BEFORE AND THE DAY OF ELECTIONS.

-A violation of the rules during a Zero Tolerance Period will automatically result in a disqualification.

  1. The day before each election all posters (standard 8 ½ x 11 sized paper) will be removed from school.
  2. No campaign may be run out of the SU, which includes (but is not limited to) the use of SU computers, supplies, or walls/space.
  3. There is ABSOLUTELY NO ONLINE CAMPAIGNING ALLOWED

a. This includes, but is not limited to, activity on: Facebook, Sconex, Myspace, Xanga

b. Campaigning activity that is not allowed may include, but is not limited to:

-Creation of Groups promoting your campaign

-Wall Posts asking others to vote for a certain candidate

-Messages

c. Creating Webpages to promote your campaign is not allowed.

d. You may inform others of the election, but may not mention your or others’ candidacy online. The in-school campaigning should be enough to let others know of your running.

e. Don’t discuss your campaign strategy online—use e-mail or phone.

f. We ask that all candidates and their campaign managers have their Facebook profiles/walls/superwalls, etc. open and available to the Stuyvesant community to access.

This must be done by May 18.

A Note on Sabotage

-Intentionally disrupting and/or attempting to disqualify another ticket’s campaign are prohibited. Any ticket caught sabotaging other campaigns, the offending ticket will automatically be disqualified, no questions asked.

Penalties/Violations: Two Strike Policy

1. If one rule is broken, those responsible will lose one day of campaigning, meaning:

-Neither you nor your campaigners may distribute your materials for one day, all your posters will be removed for the day

2. If two rules are broken, the candidate will be immediately disqualified from the elections.

3. All incidents will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the BOE.

Reporting

-If you notice any of the above rules being violated, immediately report to a BOE member, with proof. We will decide on a course of action after consideration.

 

*Note

-All candidates MUST HAVE passed all of their classes. If either person on a ticket has failed a class, that ticket will be disqualified from the elections.
